'G.L.A.S.S. A Theatrical Construction' originally was thought as a working-title for
a proposed collaboration by the PrinzRegententheater in Bochum/ Germany.
But then just stayed on, -for it described best the whole production + working process and also due to the time constraint, as so often this project also was then under a very tight schedule.
The original idea, as being an visual artist, -was to create an exhibition setting that then comes to life as a performance, especially since often Installations incorporate hundreds of writings, drawings and other objects in glass constructions.
So have an actor emerging from such a transparent object and have him act out the various themes seemed a logical extension of having an exhibition come to life.
That concept, -to have the whole audience like attendees at an art-exhibition mingle around the glass stage-objects with its actor encased within one of those objects proved to be first an additional and somehow terrifying challenge to the theater, but then worked surprisingly well.
'G.L.A.S.S. A Theatrical Construction' consists therefor of an about 20 - 30 minutes exhibition-like opening phase, that turns then in a circa 75 minute performance with seated spectators.
The themes and scenes of the play were developed in collaboration with the theater, but based and evolved from the various artworks that were created specifically for this project in a step by step process.
The large white paintings in the back act then also as the screen for the video projections that vary at times with the life images from a hanging video camera above the set.
The story-line of the performance is in short a par-force tour through the 20th century interwoven with the story of the acting figure, a sort of deranged scientist.
